Description

Agricultural ecologist James Thompson has been working with farming communities in many interesting corners of the world for more than 40 years. From his childhood in rural Australia and technical education at Sydney’s Ryde School of Horticulture, James gained his early career experience in horticultural production in Kenya. Inspired by the traditional food and farming culture of Africa he returned to Australia to undertake undergraduate studies in ecological agriculture at the University of Sydney before joining the International Ecological Agriculture M.Sc. program at the University of Kassel, Witzenhausen, Germany. His thesis research on traditional agriculture systems in Oman and Sudan created a pathway to career roles with the Abu Dhabi Farmers’ Services Centre, U.A.E. and, since 2021, the Royal Commission for AlUla, Saudi Arabia. James works with a team of local and international in the restoration of AlUla’s historic oasis agriculture system and with local farming families who create and share their unique agricultural products and agri-tourism experiences.
